We are redefining psychosis.
We are reimagining mental health care.
We are ISPS-US.
There's more to psychosis care than meds-and-beds.
For most mental health conditions, experiences are understood within the context of one’s life, and a range of approaches are offered to support recovery. However, psychosis is treated differently. Too often, the first—or only—response is medication and hospitalization. Therapy or other supports are overlooked, undervalued, or even denied. People deserve care that acknowledges their full humanity. The ISPS movement champions access to diverse approaches to psychosis, including therapies, peer support, culturally specific care, and crisis alternatives - because medication should be one choice among many, not the only option.
No one is just a diagnosis. Mental health is about people, not just labels.
We believe in the right of the person to identify, define, and understand their own experiences. "Psychosis" can be understood in a variety of ways including spiritual experiences, gifts, adaptations to trauma or sociopolitical environments, neurodiversity and/or illness. Too many people are told their struggles are just symptoms to be managed rather than human experiences to make sense of. Healing goes beyond labels—it’s about rebuilding connection, finding meaning, and addressing the real causes of distress.
Healing isn't just personal. It's social, it's collective, it's possible.
Trauma, poverty, discrimination, and inequity all affect mental health—yet most psychosis treatment ignores these realities. The ISPS movement challenges the status quo, advocating for mental health care that addresses social determinants, prioritizes community and relationships, and offers choices, not forced interventions. We believe in a future where people diagnosed with psychosis are provided structural and social supports that promote full community participation and flourishing.
